Ben Dreavie,

Achfary.

 

 

Accessed from Lochmore Lodge, south-east of Achfary. Parked in the track entrance at 30270-38561 then walked up the road to ascend on the unmapped track at 29489-39183. Followed the track up to the ruined shieling at Bealach nam Fiann then diverted onto the track to the summit. Flat, rocky plateau with three small cairns. Returned on the outward route. Pleasant day with a couple of short showers and snow underfoot.

Circular walk from Innerwick. Followed the track west up the Allt a’ Choire Uidhre then continued north-east to the 741m summit. Descended north-east to the shielings in the Lairig a’ Mhuic then returned on the track. Overcast day with cloud on the distant high tops.

29th January

Glen Calvie.

 

 

Circular walk on tracks from Glencalvie Lodge. Walked the track south up Glen Calvie to the forestry at Diebidale. Continued around the woodland then returned on the higher track towards Cnoc na Tuppat. Very stormy day with frequent light showers and a bit of hail.

5th February

Cuaich,

Dalwhinnie.

 

 

Circular walk on tracks. Parked across the A9 from Etteridge and walked the tarmac road to the Cuaich track. Continued under the A9 and along the Allt Cuaich to Loch Cuaich. Followed the track past the loch and northwards to Phones, returning to the car via Etteridge. Wet and windy day with rain and sleet.

12th February

Meall na Leitreach,

Achfary.

 

 

Parked south-east of Achfary at 31853-37584 on Loch More. Followed the track south-east past Beinn Lice to its highest point then continued onwards to the summit cairn. Returned on the outward route. Rainy day with fierce wind on the final ascent.

19th February

Strath Cuileannach,

Croick Church.

 

 

Planned to walk from Croick Church up the track past Lubachoinnich cottage to Creag Mhor bothy. Arrived within sight of the bothy to find that the river bridge had been washed away. Returned on the outward route. Sunny day with blue sky and snow underfoot. Saw many Sika deer.

26th February

Meall an Aonaich,

Glen Oykel.

 

 

Parked a mile south-east of the access track by the road bridge over the Allt Eileag (GR: 30909-07171). Walked the track past Loch Ailsh and Benmore Lodge to ascend via Sron Sgaile. Returned on the outward route. Pleasant weather on the approach but fierce wind on the open hill. Mixed success on the final ascent. One team member remained at base camp whilst the other made the successful summit bid.

5th March

Sgor Mor,

Baddoch.

 

 

Parked at Alltamhait, south of Braemar. Crossed the river to the ruins of Coirenalarig and ascended into the coire from there. Climbed the east ridge of Creag a’ Mhadaidh to reach the 804m summit cairn. Proceeded over the high ground via Carn Ghriogair and Sgor Mor to the 938m eastern top of An Socach. Descended roughly eastwards to the grouse butt track then returned on the main track down the Baddoch Burn. Sunny day with blue skies and snow on the high ground.

12th March

Beinn Tharsuinn,

Diebidale.

Walked the track up Glen Calvie then continued on the ATV track up the Diebidale Ridge. Visited the 653m cairn and 686m summit cairn at the end of the long ridge before moving on to Beinn Tharsuinn. Returned on the outward route. Rainy forecast but mostly dry with a brisk wind on the descent.

Lairig Eilde &

Lairig Gartain,

Glencoe.

 

 

Circular walk through the two mountain passes either side of Buachaille Etive Beag, Glencoe. Parked at 19650-56400 and walked a short section of the old road to the large roadside cairn near the start of the Lairig Eilde path. Followed the path through the hills almost as far as the tarmac road in Glen Etive. Returned on the Lairig Gartain path and a short section of main road (as the old road was tediously boggy). Warm sunny day with cool breeze.

26th March

Coulags path circuit.

 

 

Circular walk on the path around the base of the Munro Maol Chean-dearg. Walked the path northwards from Coulags into Coire Fionnaraich via Fionnaraich bothy and the Clach nan Con-fionn stone. Ascended westwards to the Bealach a’ Choire Ghairbh then continued on the path around Maol Chean-dearg, over the Bealach na Lice and back into Coire Fionnaraich. Sunny day with stunning scenery.

2nd April

Bendronaig Lodge,

Attadale.

 

 

Walked the track from Attadale to the bothy at Bendronaig Lodge via Loch an Droighinn, Loch na Caillich and Srath Feith a’ Mhadaidh. Returned on the outward route. Sunny day with snow on the high tops.

16th April

River Laxford walk.

 

 

Walked the river-side path along the northern bank from Laxford Bridge to Stack Lodge. Returned on the path on the other side of the river. Minor detour on the outward route up the Glac a’ Mhind as far as Loch Glac a’ Mhind. Warm sunny day.

23rd April

Killilan circular walk.

 

 

Circular walk from Killilan up Glen Ling and Gleann a’ Choire Dhomhain to the ruin at Tigh Uisdein. Continued south-west into Coire Caol to return via Bealach Mhic Bheathain (758m) and Coire Mor. Sunny day with pleasant breeze. (Car park full so parked off-road at the corner 93871-30100).

1st May

Cnoc a’ Mhadaidh,

Kylesku.

 

 

Walked in to Glendhu bothy along the shoreline track from Kylestrome. Continued up the track into Gleann Dubh and beyond with a minor deviation to climb Cnoc a’ Mhadaidh. Returned on the outward route. Fine weather with plenty of sunshine and blue skies.

7th May

Meall Beag,

Black Mount,

Glencoe.

 

 

Walked the West Highland Way from the Glencoe Ski Centre to Ba Cottage and Ba Bridge. Continued south to just beyond the forestry plantation then turned north-east to climb Meall Beag (476m) and the neighbouring hill (492m). Returned on the outward route. Warm, sunny day.

Historical note: to the north of Ba Bridge on this route is another bridge called Drochaid an t-Saighdeir (Soldier’s Bridge), named after a soldier who was found murdered near here in the 18th century).

11th June

Stack Lodge track.

 

 

Walked the track from Stack Lodge around the northern end of Arkle towards Foinaven. Very wet and windy day. Hazy scenery but looked impressive. No photographs.

18th June

Auchnafree Hill.

 

 

Parked in the Sma’ Glen and walked the track up Glen Almond to Auchnafree. Crossed the river at Larichfraskhan then continued on the track to the summit. Returned along the broad ridge to Eagle’s Rock then descended into Coire Chultrain to join the track to a river bridge and the outward track. Sunny day and brisk wind with a short period of drizzle on the ascent.

25th June

The Prince’s Cairn,

Ballochbuie Forest,

Braemar.

 

 

Walked the track south-east from the Bridge of Dee at Keiloch (Invercauld) to the iron footbridge on the Garbh Allt. Continued eastwards on paths around Cnapan Nathraichean to the Prince’s Stone*. Returned on the path down the Ballochbuie Burn then westwards towards Garbh Allt Shiel. Warm sunny day with pleasant breeze.

 

*The Prince’s Stone is a natural rock inscribed with:

 

Here H.R.H. the Prince Consort slept on the night of the 5th Oct 1857 in a wooden hut.

2nd July

Glenlicht House and beyond on the Affric-Kintail Way,

Morvich.

 

 

Walked the track up Gleann Lichd as far as the cottage then continued uphill on a very pleasant and scenic footpath. Turned back at the end of the climb, marked by a cairn at 02610-17220 (315m/1033ft). Rainy day with low cloud on the high tops.

9th July

Carn Chois,

Glen Turret,

Crieff.

 

 

Parked at the water works and walked the road to the reservoir dam. Crossed the causeway and followed the track round to the southern slopes of Beinn Liath. Ascended the hill from the track junction at 79351-25883. Descended an east-facing coire to join a short track back to the dam. Hot sunny day with pleasant breeze.

23rd July

Carn Bad a’ Chreamha,

Inverinate.

 

 

Walked the road from the Community Centre to the point on the minor road where it crosses Coire Dhuinnid. Followed the path along An Leth Allt to height 311m then turned left on a path up the Allt a' Mhaim. Climbed a rickety fence to reach the summit cairn then returned on the outward route. Warm and dry on the ascent but light rain most of the way back.

30th July

Cnoc Tigh Sheilg,

Achfary.

 

 

Slight variation of the 11th June outing. Walked the track from Stack Lodge to Cnoc Tigh Sheilg (242m), a rocky knoll overlooking Loch na Tuadh. Returned on the outward route. Cloudy day with light drizzle on the return.

13th August

Beinn Bheag,

Glencoe.

 

 

Short walk along part of the old road and then up the Devil’s Staircase section of the West Highland Way. Returned on the outward route. Sweltering hot day.

20th August

Carn an Tuirc,

Braemar.

 

 

Parked at grid ref: 14237-81391 and walked the road a mile north to Alltamhait. Climbed Carn Dubh (822m) to the south-east via the Allt a’ Mhaide footpath and the grouse butts track. Continued south-east to Carn an Tuirc, passing the ruins of a 1950s ski hut and associated ski-tow debris. Descended westwards to a footpath along another watercourse through scattered township ruins. Avoided half of the road walking back to the car using a section of the old military road to Sean Spittal Bridge. Sunny day with strong breeze keeping things cool.

27th August

Creag an Loch &

Craig Hulich,

Amulree.

 

 

From Amulree, walked the Rob Roy Way to Wester Kinloch then continued northwards on the Kinloch Burn track. Approached Creag an Loch over rough moorland via the 608m top to the south. Returned to the outward track for the approach to Craig Hulich with another short stretch of pathless moorland. Descended north-eastwards to re-join the track for the short walk back to Amulree. Warm, sunny day.

17th September

Maovally,

Loch Shin.

 

 

Maovally is a 511m hill at the head of Glen Cassley. Walked the track (which turned out to be a tarmac road) from the three houses at Corrickinlock on the Loch Shin road. Overcast day with occasional drizzle and cloud on the high tops.

24th September

Carnan Cruithneachd,

Morvich.

Followed the road past Lienassie and the track through Dorusduain Wood to reach the open hill at 98257-24066. Continued on the path for a further kilometre before heading north-east to the summit. Descended steep ground south-east then proceeded onwards to the cairn on Suie Dhu and the Bealach na Sroine footpath. Returned on this path and the woodland tracks. Pleasant day with a couple of short spells of drizzle.

8th October

Meall Dearg,

Amulree.

 

 

Walked a short section of the old military road from Amulree to the ruined bridge in Glen Fender. Joined a modern track up the glen which ascends Beinn Liath and continues to Meall Dearg. Returned on the outward route via the little summit cairn on Beinn Liath. Pleasant sunny day with cool breeze.

15th October

Na Tuadhan,

Inchnadamph.

 

 

Walked the path from Inchnadamph up Gleann Dubh, following the River Traligill and the Allt a’ ChoinneMhill. Na Tuadhan appears to have twin summits of 852m and 860m. Visited both tops then returned on the outward route. Rain at first but soon cleared up to a pleasant sunny day with cool breeze.

22nd October

Bealach nam Meirleach,

West Merkland.

 

 

Rainy day walk up the track and back from West Merkland cottage. Walked to the far end of the third lochan then returned. Very low cloud with light rain for most of the walk.

29th October

Circular walk: Glen Lui and Glen Dee.

 

 

Walked up Glen Lui from Linn of Dee to Bob Scott’s bothy and Derry Lodge. Continued up Gleann Laoigh Bheag, past Luibeg Bridge towards the Lairig Ghru. Deviated westwards from the highest point of the path to join the Glen Dee path southwards along the Allt Clais Mhadaidh. Arrived at White Bridge as darkness fell and finished the walk by headtorch. Very pleasant day with persistent drizzle for the last couple of miles.

5th November

Cnoc a’ Mhadaidh,

Foinaven.

 

 

Walked the track up Strath Dionard then followed the Allt Coire Duail up to the lochan. Continued to Bealach nan Carn and the summit cairn then descended eastwards back to the outward track. Wet day with strong wind higher up.

26th November

Coire Grannda,

Torridon.

 

 

Walked the footpath south, past the SMC Ling Hut and up into Coire Grannda. Continued towards Coire Lair to the lochan on the bealach then returned on the outward route. Wet and windy day.

3rd December

Ben Macdui.

 

 

Walked the path from the ski station up the Fiacaill a’ Choire Chais to the 1141m cairn. Continued over Stob Coire an t-Sneachda and along the path past Lochan Buidhe to the summit. Returned northwards, diverting at Lochan Buidhe over Miadan Creag an Leth-choin and the gradual descent to the ski station. Cold day with light wind and low cloud. Short boulder field sections gave tedious passage over very slippy rocks.

10th December

Loch an Eoin,

Annat, Torridon.

 

 

Walked the footpath from Annat out to Loch an Eoin then onwards to Bealach na Lice. Returned on the outward route. Drizzle to start but sunshine and blue sky later. Cold day with snow underfoot.
