Very cold and windy with incomplete snow cover. Good visibility with higher hills having a total covering of snow. Had a close encounter with a mountain hare in winter colours.

Ascended from Glen Coe. Descended south-east to Bealach Easan and Gleann Leac na Muidhe. Not much snow, summit in light cloud.

21st January

Strathconon: hill-walk to Glen Orrin.

 

 

Road along Loch Beannacharain to Inverchoran, up Gleann Chorainn and into Glen Orrin. East past lochs on River Orrin then north over Bog an Aithgeiorra. Wet and windy. Good view of Strathfarrar hills.

Beinn a’ Chrulaiste.

Ascended from the Kings House Hotel via Meall Bhalach and descended to Altnafeadh. Settled weather with soft snow underfoot. Excellent mountain scenery in all directions.

Very interesting and scenic walk in calm weather. Many wreaths of low cloud around hills and in glens. Ascended the north ridge via Seann Chruach and returned down the south ridge and into Coire a’ Bhuiridh. Superb views towards Eigg and Rum and of mountain scenery near and far.

Beinn Iaruinn.

Combination of wind, snow, sunshine and cloud resulted in variable conditions. Followed the Allt a’ Bhreac Achaidh to the bealach and approached from there. Continued clockwise for the return to the road with a superb view into a snowy Coire nan Eun. Encountered Parallel Roads of Glen Roy on descent. Many deer in the glen.

Cold wind but sunny day with excellent visibility. Light rain commenced once off high ground; no snow underfoot. Excellent walk over rugged terrain with mountainous scenery in all directions. Ascended via Coire Mainnrichean  and descended over the westerly tops.

Sgorr na Diollaid.

Wind, cloud and light drizzle with occasional glimpses of distant hills and glens. Fairly direct ascent from Muchrachd with a return via the 777m top. Interesting summit with twin rocky knolls. Sheltered in howff just below summit to eat.

Really nice day with hazy views of the Lawers range and Loch Tay. Walked up Gleann na Chilleine to Dunan and climbed the southern slopes. Descended to the north past Beinn Bhreac.

Overcast day with all immediate surroundings visible. Ascended from the south and returned via the western slopes. Built a snowman on the sandy river bank.

Ascended over Braigh Bhlaich from Stronchreggan. Completed circuit with descent of south-east ridge. Clear sunny day with light snow shower on summit. Good view of snowy Ben Nevis. Saw a few lizards.

Clear sunny day. Excellent views towards Mull, Morvern, Glen Coe, Glen Etive and Ben Cruachan. Snowy mountain tops in all directions. More lizards.

Carn a’ Chuilinn.

Interesting but rugged walk from Loch Tarff. Disturbed a grouse sitting on a nest with several eggs. Light snow showers in summit area. Hazy views of Great Glen but good view of Corrieyairack Pass.

Ganu Mor, Foinaven.

Approached from the North along Strath Dionard. Followed the Allt Coire Duail to the lochan then climbed into Glas-Choire Granda. Ascended tedious scree to the bealach then remnants of firm snow to the summit. Descended via Ceann Garbh and its north-western slopes. Fine, settled weather with a sunny evening. Superb scenery with excellent views of neighbouring Corbetts.

Buidhe Bheinn.

*This Corbett is twinned with Sgurr a’ Bhac Chaolais climbed in November 2009. The hills are the same height and connected by a high ridge. They can’t therefore both be Corbetts and are thus counted as one.

Sweltering hot day with blue skies and strong sun. Fantastic mountain scenery throughout. Started from Loch Coire Shubh and climbed the steep Cadha Mor path out of Kinloch Hourn. Followed a good stalker’s path to the twin tops of Buidhe Bheinn then descended south into Coire Lair. Followed the Allt Coire Sgoireadail path back to the lochan.

Pleasant day with cool breeze. Approached up the Fin Glen from Ardeonaig on Loch Tay. Visited a substantial shieling site on the Eas Domhain burn. Returned via Meall nan Oighreag and Creag Liath.

Cloudy day with good visibility followed by a sunny evening. Started from Achlean in Glen Feshie. Walked the stalker’s path up Slochd Beag then followed the Allt Lorgaidh and Caochan Tarsuinn water courses. Returned on the track through Slochd Mor.

Long, high-level walk in remote hill country. Excellent view back to Sguman Coinntich from the east. Descended to Carnach and returned via Glen Elchaig. Light rain showers all day but generally good visibility.

Ascended from Corran near Arnisdale on Loch Hourn. Plenty of rain and cloud but little wind. Interesting hills with close up view of the eastern end of Beinn Sgritheall.

Dry start but rainy summit. Walked from Loch Lyon dam up the private road through the Lairig nan Lunn. Climbed east to the summit then descended the northern slopes. Views down Glen Lyon mostly obscured by cloud.

Beinn Odhar, Beinn Chaorach & Cam Chreag.

Three of the five Tyndrum Corbetts. Very grassy hills with rocky outcrops make for interesting but easy walking. Windy day with continuous light showers. Plenty of cloud. Anti-clockwise circuit descending the north ridge of Cam Chreag and returning via Gleann Coralan and the West Highland Way.

Mostly nice day with clear views of all surrounding mountains including the rugged side of Beinn Dorain. Anti-clockwise circuit with descent towards Loch Lyon and return via the Auch Gleann. Located site of ancient burial ground in the glen.

Walked from Drochaid Mhor northwards to Loch Gaineamhach then ascended the crags and grass terraces right of Sron Coire an Fhamhair. Frequent cloud and drizzle but superb views of the eastern corries. Descended to the south-east with spectacular view back towards A’Chioch and the main ridge. Two dangerous holes observed near Beinn Bhan summit.

Hot sunny day. Long, high-level walk with mountain scenery in all directions. Good view down Loch Linnhe towards Mull.

Hot sunny day. Approached from Strontian via Sgurr na h-Ighinn. Descended a grassy ramp across the face of the hill towards Glas Bhealach then followed the burn. Rugged mountainous scenery.

Beinn Resipol.

Ascended from Ariundle in increasing cloud and drizzle. No views at the top but craggy summit ridge provided interest. Good view of Sgurr Dhomhnuill and Garbh Bheinn on the return.

Forestation prevented direct access so walked up Glen Hurich to Tom na h-Eilde and climbed south from there. Cold, wet and windy but cloud frequently cleared to reveal surrounding hills and glens.

Cold, sunny day with good visibility. Excellent views of surrounding mountains, particularly the Ben Lui and Beinn Dorain groups. Most striking aspect of these two Corbetts was Coire Daimh and Coire Ghamhnain. Met a pair of gold prospectors.

Cold, windy walk with clear summit and bright sunshine later. Simple hill but good views of the many surrounding mountains. Saw a few shielings by the burn.

Beautiful sunny day. Examined shielings at Airigh Chailleach before ascending un-named south-west top at 736m. Proceeded to summit with superb mountainous views. Descended the eastern slopes of Coire Chailleach.

Sgurr a’ Chaorachain.

Damp day with plenty of cloud. Ascended along the Russel Burn into Coire a’ Chaorachain. Returned past the transmission mast to Bealach na Ba and the road.

Eas a’ Chual Aluinn.

 

 

Britain’s highest waterfall at 658ft in Assynt, Sutherland. Pleasant stalker’s path through rugged terrain with many lochans. Cold day with dusting of snow on the hills. Epic day with three dangerous river crossings and over 6 hours of darkness walking.

3rd November

Meall an Fhudair.

Ascended over Troisgeach and Meall nan Caora. Descended into the Lairig Arnan and returned via the track. Good covering of snow on the tops. Mixture of weather with sun, rain, snow and hail in short bursts. Cloudy higher up but good views of surrounding mountains on the way. Friendly cat with no road sense at the farm.

Leitir Fura.

 

 

Leisurely walk from Kinloch to the ruined township of Leitir Fura in Sleat, Skye. Nice day with superb views across the Sound of Sleat to the snowy mountains of Knoydart.

1st December

Kingussie.

 

 

Sunny day with dusting of snow at all levels. Climbed Creag Bheag and descended to Auchtuchle township. Returned past Loch Gynack and the Glen Gynack township.

8th December

Coire Ardair.

 

 

Walked in from Aberarder Farm to view the lochan and crags. Misty in the coire with thawing snow underfoot. Very windy.

15th December

Ben Wyvis.

 

 

Repeat Munro. Ascended An Cabar in snowy conditions. Partial white-out along the main ridge. Continued north to the bealach and descended Coire Tom a’ Choinnich to the forest track.

22nd December

Loch Affric.

 

 

Walked the anti-clockwise circuit of Loch Affric on a very wet day. Misty views of snowy mountains.

29th December

Strath Brora.

 

 

Walked the circuit of Loch Brora from the footbridges at either end i.e. Doll to Kilbraur. Visited site of Pictish fort, Broch and township ruins on outward route. Moonlight finish.
