Pleasant walk up the stalker’s path from the Allt a’ Chonais footbridge. Good view towards Torridon on the ascent but misty higher up with light snow.

30th January

Beinn Loinne.

Ascended from near the Cluanie Inn with fresh snow underfoot. Superb views of the surrounding Kintail mountains covered in snow. Intermittent cloud on nearby hills but clear all day on Beinn Loinne.

13th February

Glas Leathad Beag.

 

 

Ascended from Glen Glass, above Evanton. Excellent views of the rugged eastern corries of Ben Wyvis. Original intention was to continue over to Ben Wyvis but cloud descended creating near white out conditions.

Beinn Mheadhonach.

Ascended from Fender Bridge. Interesting route from Gilbert’s Bridge onwards with evidence of township occupation on the hillside. Sunny day, blue sky, no wind and total snow cover higher up. Saw a few mountain hares. Excellent views of Beinn a’ Ghlo and the southern Cairngorms.

Ascended from Cairngorm ski area. Beautiful sunny day with total snow cover. Excellent views of Braeriach, Cairn Toul and Devil’s Point in between sporadic cloud cover.

Ben Vrackie.

Clear sunny day but very windy on the summit. Started from Killiecrankie but joined the Moulin path for the ascent. Traversed north-west to Meall an Daimh and descended from there. Superb views north to Beinn a’ Ghlo group.

Corrieyairack Hill & Gairbeinn.

Pleasant ascent of the snowy Corrieyairack Pass from Melgarve bothy. Cloud cleared to continual sunshine to give good views of distant snow-capped mountains. Visited the bothy at the end of the walk. Saw dozens of stags by the Spey on departure from Melgarve.

Sunshine and showers, occasionally dull but mostly good visibility. Visited Duinish bothy on the outward route from Dalnaspidal. Impressive summit cairn.

Ascended from Garva Bridge on a warm, sunny day. Panoramic views of snow-capped distant mountains including Ben Wyvis, Ben Nevis and Cairn Gorm.

Clear day but windy. Ascended from near Milltown of Laggan. Good view across to Ben Rinnes, distant views of the snowy Cairngorms.

Nice sunny day. Ascended from Achnanellan along the full length of the Druim Gleann Laoigh east ridge. Descended via Coire nan Laoigh and viewed the volcanic agglomerate in the bed of the burn. Superb views of the snowy Nevis range throughout the day.

Cold, clear day with occasional sunshine. Superb walk over all five tops with a low-level return between the Malmsgaig burn and the frontal buttresses.

Sgurr nan Eugallt.

Clear, sunny day. Superb views of surrounding mountains especially the Knoydart group. Skye and Ben Nevis also visible. Traversed all the tops from Sgurr Sgiath Airigh to Sgurr a’ Chlaidheimh.

22nd May

Ladhar Bheinn.

Warm dry weekend but much cloud on the high tops. Intermittent cloud clearance revealed most of the scenery at some time or other. Ascended from Barrisdale via Mam Barrisdale pass, camped near the summit and descended the north-east ridge over Stob a’ Choire Odhair. Superb views into Coire Dhorrcaill on the descent.

Beinn Bhan.

Walked a clockwise circuit of the impressive Coire Mhuilinn. Cloudy day with drizzle but excellent views of Beinn Bhan and the immediate vicinity. Quite cold at the summit trig.

12th June

Dun Caan, Raasay.

 

 

Sunny day with light breeze. Walked a 10-mile anti-clockwise route from ferry terminal, along disused railway, across moorland to Dun Caan, then west to road and back through Inverarish. Excellent views from summit.

19th June

Quiraing, Skye.

 

 

Took the hill path from Flodigarry past Loch Langaig and Loch Hasco. Visited the Quiraing then walked to Bealach Ollasgairte and climbed Meall na Suiramach and Sgurr Mor. Spotted what may have been a pair of white-tailed sea eagles from the northern cliffs. Sunny day with a strong breeze.

27th June

Stac Pollaidh.

 

 

Hot, sunny day with a couple of brief showers. Walked an anti-clockwise circuit of the hill, taking in the eastern top en-route. Didn’t attempt main summit due to technical difficulty of the crags. Visited Meall a’ Chaorainn and saw loads of newts and big tadpoles in the nearby lochan.

Very windy day but mostly sunny. Distant scenery visible but hazy. Pleasant pair of hills but loose boulders and slabs on the summits made for tedious walking in the wind.

Grassy hills but quite a strenuous walk for the moderate distance. Warm sunny day with superb mountainous scenery. Excellent view along Loch Morar towards Eigg and Rum.

Hill behind the Allargue Hotel. Easy walk with distant views towards the Cairngorms. Returned via Beinn a’ Chruinnich.

Geal Charn.

Followed the estate track from Dorback Lodge up the Allt Mor and ascended Geal Charn Beag from the south-east. Superb view of Ben Avon and Beinn a’ Bhuird from this top. Followed the ridge to the main summit then returned via Upper Dell.

Creag Mhor.

Walked from Glenmore Lodge through Ryvoan Pass, down Strath Nethy to the Saddle. Excellent view of Loch Avon and the surrounding hills down to the Feith Buidhe. Continued east to the Fords of Avon and northwards up the Lairig an Laoigh as far as the lochan. Turned east to ascend Creag Mhor then dropped north-west to the path again. Almost continuous rain, paths and tracks more like rivers, darkness finish.

Ascended from Inverailort and followed the ridge from Druim Fiaclach. Nice weather with awesome scenery both near and far. No time to include An Stac. Moonlight finish.

Clear sunny day. Superb scenery in all directions: Glen Dessary, Moidart, Ben Nevis etc. Stags bellowing. Visited Dubh Lighe bothy.

Pleasant walk with good views of the local scenery. Occasional cloud higher up but mostly clear. Visited other rocky tors in addition to the summit crags i.e. Lady’s Chair, Scurran of Well and Scurran of Morinsh.

Carn Dearg Mor.

Walked from Achlean past Glenfeshie Lodge and up to Lochan an t-Sluic to approach from the south. Descended via the north ridge down to Carnachuin. Good visibility throughout the day.

6th November

Meallach Mhor.

Approached along the private road in Glen Tromie and climbed from the Allt Bhran bridge. Good view south into the Gaick wilderness. Reasonably good visibility with snow falling near the summit. Returned north over the high ground, descending the north ridge of Croidh-La.

13th November

A’ Chaoirnich.

Followed the Gaick track north from Dalnacardoch on the A9. Snowing on the higher ground with good snow cover underfoot. Cloud cover cleared to reveal surrounding hills. Walked north from the summit to look across to Gaick Lodge and Loch an t-Seilich.

20th November

Beinn a’ Chuallaich.

Ascended from the south using the stalker’s path with a minor deviation due to pheasant shooting. Close view of snow-topped Schiehallion. Cold and wintry at the summit with patchy snow cover. Descended to the east and returned via the road.

11th December

The Fara.

Ascended from Dalwhinnie and followed the ridge over intermediate summits to Meall Cruaidh. Descended to Ben Alder Lodge and returned via the track. Most of the hill devoid of snow. Very windy but excellent views towards Ben Alder, Creag Meagaidh and the hills in-between.

18th December

Sgurr an Utha.

Rugged terrain and powdered snow made it a tough slog to the top. Descended in darkness from Fraoch-bheinn aided by favourable weather and moonlit hills.
