Corbett in the Ladder Hills above Scalan, Glenlivet. Circular walk from Well of the Lecht with a detour to Carn Mor. Saw several mountain hares in winter coats. Visited the old Lecht Mine building. Almost no snow.

24th January

Beinn Enaiglair.

Corbett north-east of Braemore Junction on the road to Ullapool. Intermittent snow showers with plenty of powdered snow underfoot. Completed a circuit of the mountain with the most interesting terrain on the climb from the north-eastern bealach.

14th February

Beinn a’ Chaisteil.

Corbett up Strath Vaich towards Aultguish Inn. Reasonable day with snow at all levels. Extensive views of wild and rugged terrain and many deer encountered. Bit of a slog towards the end with a long darkness finish.

28th February

Creag nan Gabhar.

Corbett south of Braemar. Reasonable day with views of the Glen Shee hills and distant cloudy Cairngorms. Saw several mountain hares on the descent to Lochcallater Lodge. Many old shielings down near the lodge. Good view down the glen to Tolmount.

Corbett near Corgarff Castle. Did an anti-clockwise circuit of the hill and all its lesser tops. Patchy snow, wet and windy but mostly reasonable visibility. Saw several mountain hares.

Climbed from near Gairnshiel. Route went passed Glenfenzie ruin, up Cairnagour Hill, over Mona Gowan and along high ridge to Morven. Sunny but unpleasantly windy. Saw several mating frogs and a few mountain hares.

Originally intended climbing Ben Macdui but blizzard conditions beyond the Hutchison Memorial Hut curtailed the excursion.

Carn na Saobhaidhe.

Corbett accessed from Strathdearn near Tomatin. Returned via Carn Mhic Iamhair (MacIver). Saw three golden eagles above Strathdearn.

Corbett in Coigach climbed from Knockan Crag car park. Route involved an anti-clockwise circuit of the hill taking in the outlying north-western spur. Beautiful day with frequent sighting of eagles.

Corbett in Assynt. Cloudy day with restricted visibility higher up. Saw several newts and a pair of ptarmigan. Visited ruins of Ardvreck Castle and Calda House on Loch Assynt.

Ascent via Loch Etchachan from Linn of Dee. Mainly dry but reduced visibility high up due to thick cloud. Long day.

Corbett above Loch Assynt. Climbed from Inchnadamph and returned via north-west ridge and the Lairig Unapool. Rainy day but quite a pleasant walk. Cloudy but intermittent long-range views from higher ground.

30th – 31st May

Luinne Bheinn & Meall Buidhe.

Sweltering weekend. Walked in from Kinloch Hourn to Barrisdale. Ascended Mam Barrisdale pass and climbed Luinne Bheinn, pitching tent just below the summit. Completed the ridge between Luinne Bheinn and Meall Buidhe on the Sunday and descended across Coire Odhair to Mam Barrisdale. Caught the boat back from Barrisdale to Kinloch Hourn.

Mostly clear day with fine views. Brief glimpses of the main Cuillin Ridge before cloud obscured everything. Ascended north-west ridge and descended by Fionn Choire.

20th June

Sgurr nan Gillean.

 

 

Very pleasant day after a drizzly start. Good view of main Cuillin Ridge before it became obscured by cloud. Climb aborted high on south-east ridge due to tricky scramble.

27th – 28th June

Beinn Tharsuinn, Lurg Mhor & Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich.

Very hot and sunny weekend. Climbed the Corbett Beinn Tharsuinn to access the main hills. Camped high on Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich. Superb views from the summit early Sunday morning.

Dull and cloudy start but very warm and sunny later. Impressive rocky scenery high up with gullies, pinnacles and vast buttresses. Superb view across to main Cuillin Ridge, totally clear of cloud.

Very rainy day with limited visibility higher up. Ascended from the glen of the Allt nan Uamh and returned via the 715m north top and Inchnadamph.

Accessed from Coir’ an Eich. Warm, clear sunny day but cloud obscured visibility to the east. Good view towards Inaccessible Pinnacle and Sgurr Alasdair. Magnetic anomaly observed on summit but compass not required.

Two Corbetts up Glen Roy, near Spean Bridge, famous for the Parallel Roads. Clockwise circular walk using south-west ridges for ascent and descent. Sunshine and showers initially with more persistent rain and cloud higher up. Enjoyed some pleasant scenery nevertheless.

Approached from Berriedale along the west bank of the Berriedale Water. Saw a group of 4 eagles hovering over the glen. Returned over Meall na Caorach to visit the broch on An Dun. Found remnants of aircraft wreckage on East Scaraben which may relate to the memorial on Creag na h-Iolaire. (Armstrong Whitworth Whitley P5070 lost on 1st May 1941).

On 10th September 2009 Sgurr nan Ceannaichean ceased to be a Munro and was reclassified as a Corbett. There are now 283 Munros and 221 Corbetts. At this point in the list the Munro and Corbett count are therefore adjusted accordingly (M274 & C29).

Two Corbetts north of Invercauld on Deeside. Beautiful sunny day. Saw mountain hares and grouse but no deer. Possible sighting of two eagles.

Corbett to the west of Linn of Dee. Ate lunch at the Chest of Dee. Excellent view of the Braeriach and Ben Macdui ranges including Coire Sputan Dearg. Beinn a’ Bhuird visible to the east.

10th October

Carn na Drochaide.

Circular walk from Keiloch to Allanaquoich then over the hill and down to Gleann an t-Slugain. Reasonable weather with good views of the cloud-topped southern Cairngorms. Bellowing stags evident.

Crisp, sunny day with excellent views. Visited the subsidiary top of Sgurr an Fhidhleir.

Dull but dry day. Excellent views from Ben Nevis to Creag Meagaidh. Descent through Coire na Reinich very impressive. Saw many deer.

Pleasant scenery in Gleann Cia-aig but cloud and rain limited visibility higher up. Interesting views in all directions during intermittent cloud clearance.

Clockwise walk from Shiel Bridge up Gleann Undalain, over the top and down via Coire nam Meirleach. Lovely day with stunning views of Kintail, Knoydart and distant Torridon. Snow on surrounding hills.

Sgurr a’ Bhac Chaolais.

Cloudy and overcast but excellent views of surrounding hills. Swirling mist and cloud on nearby tops created some quite atmospheric scenery.

Interesting Corbett climbed from Spittal of Glenmuick with return via Carn an Daimh and Inchnabobart. Snow visible on the summit of Lochnagar on the ascent but scenery subsequently obscured by sleet and cloud.

Bright, cold day with good views up and down the Great Glen. Loch Ness and Fort Augustus clearly visible. Moderate amount of snow underfoot on the latter part of the climb. Summit views obscured by cloud.

Lovely sunny day with excellent views. Very rocky on the descent with a number of scattered deer.

12th December

Loch Etchachan.

 

 

Attempting Ben Macdui but ran out of daylight. Climbed through cloud and mist to reach Loch Etchachan in clear conditions. Plenty of hard snow from the Hutchison Memorial Hut upwards. Long walk out in darkness.
